Anchorages and Yacht Clearance in Tanna, Vanuatu
Cruising yachts coming from Fiji, New Zealand or the eastern Pacific often make Tanna their first port of call. They want to explore Tanna and then sail north with the trade winds aft of the beam to cruise the rest of Vanuatu. They correctly assume that it's an upwind beat to visit Tanna if they first clear into Port Vila.
However, there are no all-weather anchorages in Tanna and selecting the correct Tanna anchorage depends on the wind force and direction, draft of the yacht, and the available budget for getting the clearance officals to visit the yacht. It is safer and easier and cheaper to clear into Analgawat on Aneityum.
Then, once cleared in, knowing which anchorage is best for visiting the Volcano, going on a tour, experiencing a custom dance, visiting the market, snorkelling or diving all requires local knowledge.
